CAMERA SNOBS AND HOW TO ANNOY THEM
I have the D3 bought it when it first came out $5k... I just bought the D810 on ebay ... $950 (46) shuitter count.. no mistake.. 46!.. so thats where I am.. I had D2x , D2h, D2hs, D100., D200, D700 D300, D300s(2) D500.... I will never ever buy any camera brand new ever again.. the depreciation is a nightmare.. I buy Bowers and Wilkens speakers that have a retaining value forever I'm just saying..I want the D6 .. why? just to put it on the shelf and look at it.. I shoot Opera so I'm going mirrorless .. Z8 I guess.. I love cameras and stereo.. audiophile I am
I am a pro photographer and in my spare time, it’s vinyl for my hifi ….. haha, great minds think alike. If you’re looking at mirrorless to shoot opera, I would go Z6ii all day long. Way smaller than the Z8 with pretty much all the function. And now the z6iii has been released watch them drop on the second hand market. Even a Z6 will do an unbelievable job at a fraction of the cost and weight of a Z8. I have a video coming up about a shoot I did with a Z6, and the 54 metre print hung on the side of a city centre building that came from that camera, and they are as cheap as chips on eBay! Thanks for watching and commenting on my videos, I really appreciate it 👍🏻
You arE right ! right ! aNd RIGHT AGAIN!.. if you want a video camera go by a Canon video cam!! Real Still Photographer please stand up!!
Thanks
Welcome
Thank you !!! I learned a LOT !
Glad it was helpful!
You would look really good in a suit. Big suit vibes.
The entire reason we had to switch to circular polarizers is because digital cameras' sensors do not react well to polarized light, so I kind of wander if the reason some of the polarizers have a color shift is because they are not as good at depolarizing the light at the back of the filter, and the camera sensor is reacting to the partially polarized light... If would be interesting to test them on a film camera, where that does not matter, and see if the color shift still occurs... <edit> I just realized that another way to test this would be to test if the color balance shifts when the polarizes is rotated... I know the reflections would change, but does the overall color change as well... If it does, that would indicate that it is probably the depolarization part of the filter that is causing the problem...
That’s a really good point James, because the filters don’t seem to have any colour variations in the hand, so something else is producing that colour shift?
For the size - the softbox diffuser - the first tested was most surprising to me. Easiest looking to transport.
I hate to join in with the criticism, but my concern is your claim to show photography newbies the difference between film and digital. By using different focal lengths, red and orange filters with the film camera, developing for high contrast and grain, etc, you have given a false impression. Some of the comments, expressing preferences for either film or digital, based on your images, show that such individuals have been misled. I have been a keen photographer since the mid seventies, occasionally even making some money from paid jobs. It took me a very long time to move to digital, mainly because I wasn't convinced and digital winning on resolution. I mostly used 35mm, but did have 6x6, and mostly Contax cameras with Zeiss glass. Eventually I started scanning on a Minolta Scan Elite 5400, which I still have. When I first moved to digital it was with Sony A900 with 24Mp sensor. Back in the day, most people couldn't tell if I took same shot on 35mm and digital and printed it to A3 size, which was digital and which was film. I'm not saying to the trained eye that there is no difference, but by creating obvious differences and then implying that that's the difference between film and digital, you are misleading the uninitiated. I have acquired quite a few high quality compact 35mm film cameras over recent years, because I really enjoy film. You can't on the one hand say that you created obvious differences as a bit of fun and on the other hand say that you were attempting to educate, guide newbies as to the differences. Sorry to be critical.
Oh Peter, that’s a really in depth response, thank you. I hope you’re enjoying your photography, best wishes 👍🏻
Good start. There was some electrical buzz or static at certain points. I imagine 3 years later you already figured this out.
I am still torn apart when it comes to use or not use white borders when posting photos on Instagram. And I still don't know how to calculate or determine border size.
Amazing work
It pays to pick clients that are easy to work with
I’ve been shooting Fuji X-Series for ten years. I’m going to buy a used D810 plus a 50mm 1.8, and I couldn’t be more excited!!
I think for my DX DSLR I would choose the 18-200 or the 18-300 or the Tamron 18-400. Best Duane
Great choice Duane, you’re going to be able to get in real close with that Tamron 👍🏻
Fuji definitely looks better to me overall and I own nikon and Fuji
Given me ideas for street photography. Thanks
Go for it!
so true! Thanks for your thoughts about portraits!
Glad you like them!
So that’s HI (Human Intelligence) at work! Can’t beat it.
Brilliant. Love that. I might Nick that idea for a video if you don’t mind 👍🏻

Cheers Andrew 👍🏻
I absolutely like your passion for Leica Barnack ; sine a light through the lens and you'll se if it's got fungus' you'll see something milky ; my guess is that the second curtain has minuscule tears; it got c older and colder so luck was on your side ; most definitely tde camera must be adjusted , the same for your Summitar ; not one of your pics were Leica Summitar sharp !
Thank You!
You're welcome!
HI Phil. I walk around with a Nikon D40X, kit lens, and a twenty pound third party battery grip. When I am approached by such people I wait a few minutes, interrupt their pontificating, and them ask one question - "How many years have you earned a living as a professional photographer". It is joyous as they huff and puff a response trying to avoid using word amateur or enthusiast :-)))
Absolutely, infuriating Camera Snob’s, it should be an Olympic sport. Where do I sign up? 😆
This made me smile because of the people I have seen doing the 'funky chicken dad dance' as they take photos. Think like a boxer tucking your elbows in to avoid body shots and use a wrist strap. Enjoy the start to your week.
I’m definitely doing the Ali shuffle when I shoot today, 😂 Seriously good advice, I’m going to use that, don’t be a chicken be a boxer. I like it 👍🏻, cheers
How on earth do you delete every photo off his card. You know what Format means, right? You know what the trashcan icon means and the word delete. Seems weird, I think he’s telling porkys….
I couldn’t believe it. I’m going from memory here but I wasn’t used to Fuji’, I’m a Nikon user, and I wanted to quickly see an image. I had noted earlier that the playback and delete buttons were in the same place as the Nikon, top left on the back of the camera, and so when I’d taken an image I instinctively and without looking pressed what I thought was the playback button. Nothing appeared in the screen. I pressed it again and again, still no image. I gave it to Paul because I thought the buttons were not working, and then I realised, although the same buttons were in roughly the same place as the Nikon, they were reversed, and I had assumed I was pressing playback and infact was pressing the trash can 🤪
Stunning pictures, I think I might look out for one of those, I love my Helios 44-m lens a little easier to use than the 135mm but it gives some stunning results.
Go for it!
Thanks for the great tutorial. May I ask how you know how many times to advance the film at first? Or how do you know when you get to the first frame?
It’s kinda trial and error, later film cameras automatically took you to the right point, but I just advance what I think and then one more. I don’t want to risk losing the first image to fogged film because as Sod’s Law states, it will of course be the best photo of the day that you ruin. I usually advance about three frames
Old lenses can be amazing. I got a 135mm f2.8 Yashica/Contax lens in pristine condition about a year ago from eBay for £20. I've used it with a Sony APS-C and a Sony A7R full frame with excellent results.
Nice one! Those Contax lenses were incredible and picking one up for £20 is utterly astonishing. I can’t believe they are so undervalued. Thanks for sharing 👏
Old lenses are great. I scored an Olympus OM10 with three Zuiko lenses about ten years ago. For free... Freegle used to be a good place to try for old camera gear but I've not looked for years. I don't use the Olympus any more, but for a short period it was a lovely little camera to play with.
Excellent, those old Olympus lenses were awesome. There was a reason that David Bailey chose to be the face of Olympus Cameras back in the day 👏👏👏
Hi Philip... Loved your video!! Since you were using an older lens I'm assuming your cameras internal light meter didn't work? So did you just use the 'sunny 16' rule or did you use an external light meter? Stay safe!! Best wishes, Duane
Hi Duane, the metering was done through the camera; most modern cameras have a vintage lens setting which means it can’t focus the lens or change the aperture, but as long as you manually change the aperture it will handle the shuttter. In manual with an EVF that means you can nail the exposure by eye. 👀
Wow! Lovely pictures. Most would say that is a vintage lens, I'd say it's an heirloom lens. Thanks for the video.
Thank you, it’s just crazy how cheap these lenses are, photography’s best kept secret 🤫
Too bad we can't get these anymore
I don’t know what’s happened to them Joe?
I have 2 D3s cameras and 2 D700s. I got great deals with low shutter counts. I won't ever part with them.
Sorry I have absolutely no clue when setting this up for the first time how you even linked the camera it was so badly explaine, no idea what menu I need on camera nothing other than turn them on in this order and mine did not immediately link and no idea why from this poor explaination I have no clue where I need to be in the camera menu either . First time on the channel sorry guys I will not be back
Oh no, the comments section tells me it’s helped so many people but I am sorry you were not able to set it up. Maybe we went through it a bit too quickly. I hope you find a channel that explains it more clearly for you 👍🏻 I will re-make a step by step guide video. Thanks for the feedback
Great video it is always good to get some new ideas for selling work.
Absolutely!
I had my photo published in local two papers in Tunbridge Wells. They don't pay for photos anymore! I only got credits. Hence it's crap paper but oddly still expensive.
I once managed to get money from a local paper for using my pics without permission, but I had to chase like mad to get it. I've never made money from selling photos in 12 years, apart from that one example. It's not that I'm not a bad photographer either, there's no money in it unless you want to do weddings for a living IMO.
I agree, local press are reluctant to pay much these days, I'm afraid they are in decline themselves. I would however, challenge that you need to do weddings to make money. I've been a pro fro over 40 years, made a good living, raised a family, bought a number of cars and houses over the years, enjoyed some holidays too. And I have never done weddings. Like I said, know your strengths, find a market, and go for it 👍
I have one from 1957. She is still fully functional.
That’s how I feel about my Leica 50/1.0 pre 1983. Bought it in the 90’s. At some point I sold off all my M cameras but keep the Noctilux. I recently bought a Canon R6II and going to give the lens another life.
I appreciate when real photographers talk photography on UA-cam. Most "photographers" on UA-cam are always trying to sell you some new gadget, but not Rileyphotos!
Thank you, I really appreciate that 😁
Most photographer on youtube earn money without even taking picture. Their target is the viewers
Bostin.
Only us Black Country Folk are going to understand that one 😆
Love it, always wise words. You really come across well. I’m no professional nor do I want to be but I like your clips because we never stop learning.
Awesome! Thank you!
On the serious side. I think a lot of people want to earn money for free. Making nice pictures as a hobby then as a side hustle sell them.
Great work if you can get it, but you’ll make more working backwards; give em what they need and you’ll be making more I reckon. 😀
use ai generated thumbs ;)
I’m going to need to speak to my Thumbnail designer! 😉
I made a staggering 12$ on adobe stock photos!!! And atleast 60€ on a dutch stock photo site (that is unfortunately no longer there). Unfortunately it was in about 15 year....
But you made some cash Vince, that’s great 😀
Hi Philip...A very good topic video!! Stay safe and well my friend! Duane
Thanks, you too!
Great pictures its amazing what you can pick up for a few quid, I've recently spent £52 more than that on a Canon 40D, magnesium alloy body, built like a tank with a massive 10.1mp. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's as near as dame it, the same sensor as the 5D classic but an APC. If it's not the same sensor the colour science is almost identical, I can't spot the difference, I used it with some decent glass to shoot two events last weekend and it didn't miss a beat or focus.
Sounds like a bargain to me 👏
What is the lens? FL?
Just putting the full UA-cam video together. It’s a Zeiss Jena 135mm f2.8 that cost me £1 🤭
Should've added woman in bikini on train tracks. When I first started, I did that shot. She was in a full gown though. Still, I cringe nowadays. LOL
Cliche? Like that UA-cam intro video that looks like mit came from Fiverr?
Thankyou for the content creator advice Mike, much appreciated 👍🏻 I was hoping for photographer’s comments but UA-cam guru’s are also welcome 😁
I loved this video. A man talking about cliches who is also sporting a handlebar mustache asking us to "smash" the subscribe button. Layers of humor and irony. Clever! I will say this on a serious note regarding urban (or even rural) decay shots: I love making them and love looking at them. I have often heard other serious photographers pan the genre. But I wonder how they are any different from the beloved and revered human portrait? It seems to me they are perfectly analogous in that they are a single subject matter genre, everyone attempts them, most of them are mediocre or poor...........but when done well they are sublime. And doing them well is quite hard.
George, thanks for commenting. I had rather hoped that folks would land on my photography channel for photography advice, but looks like you are after fashion tips. Well I’m going to have to up my game 😆. Seriously though, I will be framing your comment though; in twenty years of schooling I was never once called clever. Thankyou, it’s made my day 🤭
@@rileyphotos I couldn't grow that mustache even if I wanted to...and now I kind of want to!
Now, a shot of the sun pertruding from someone's arse would be hysterical. 🤣
